Japanese Neriage Clay Banko Ware Dish. An interesting Japanese banko ware type dish using the neriage technique to produce swirls in the clay. The top surface is decorated with a tree branch and birds using raised enamels. There is also some scoring work and the rim has been hand formed. Underneath the plate the foot rim has been created from a serpent like coil of clay.
The base is also marked'Japan' in impressed kanji characters. Quite an unusual item with the amalgam of various styles and techniques.Probably inter war Taisho period. Some fritting at the rim, this would seem to be more likely from construction and firing than later knocks. Diameter: 18.5 cm (7 1/4 inches). Weight: 282 grams (before packing).
