This is an amazing, bright color, hand-painted Mexican TLAQUEPAQUE folk-art story plate, inspired by artist Christino Flores Medina and Nicolas de Jesus. Nicolas and Christino were famous for their bright colors (in earlier years) and the depicted stories of their region, called the Mezcala (Native's of Ameyaltepec, a small village that stands high above the Rio Balsas in the Mexican state of Guerrero; one of Mexico's main centers of indigenous Nahua-speaking people).Actual date and artist are unknown due to the wide range of students Christino and Nicolas taught. The Nahua artists where well know for their intricate scenes that narrate the communities celebration's, religious beliefs and everyday activities, first starting out on pottery then changing to Amate paper, for traveling sales purposes (Which is what they become famous for). However, there is a chance this plate was created by Nicholas, himself, when in the 1980's when he traveled extensively and lived for several years in Chicago where he worked with other artists in a graphic arts collective. Is this an actual piece by Nicholas, himself? Did he decide one day to paint on pottery to connect with his roots? Whatever the actual story is that is connected to this beautiful plate, we will never know. It measures 15.75 wide x 1.75' in total depth. This hand-panted pottery dates between 1950's-1970's or possibly 1980's; actual artist unknown. I acquired this piece at an estate sale in Ohio. It is in excellent condition, however there are some places on the front where the glaze has lifted (please view pictures). This piece depicts many different stories that emulates the culture of its origin. All Return Not Accepted Items are as is, and are not returnable. All items are listed as accurately as possible.
